Craigdarroch Castle in Victoria, British Columbia was built between 1887 to 1890 for wealthy Vancouver Island coal tycoon / Scottish immigrant Robert Dunsmuir.  It was built on a hill overlooking the City of Victoria and stands out for its beautiful steeply pitched unfading red slate roof with terracotta ridge and hip caps.

This impressive 25,000 square foot home boasted 39 rooms.  Homes like this were a status for wealthy industrial age entrepreneurs.

Over the years Craigdarroch Castle had six eras of occupation; Dunsmuir Family Home (1890-1908), Military Hospital (1919-1921), Victoria College (1921-1946), Victoria School Board Office (1946-1968), Victoria Conservatory of Music (1969-1979), Craigdarroch Castle Historical Museum Society (1979 – present).

Designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1992, restoration work has been ongoing to preserve the integrity of this grand castle.

Over the years, we have supplied slate for various repairs. The Vermont Unfading Red roofing slates are rich in color and the slates are more textured.

Sheena Owen

Sheena Owen began working for North Country Slate on October 12, 1999. Started as the Sales Coordinator and transitioned to a Sales Representative. Daily duties include providing customer service, new business development, inside sales, handling all cross-border customs issues/documentation, arranging shipments, health and safety representation and social media marketing. Sheena graduated from the University of Guelph in 1992 with a BA in English and Drama and in 1995 graduated with a Diploma in Radio and Television Broadcasting from Centennial College. Sheena’s first job was the Executive Producer’s Assistant for TV shows including Robocop, F/X The Series and Nikita. She went on to becoming an Assistant Manager at Eddie Bauer. In her spare time, Sheena enjoys traveling, gardening and hikes with family and friends.
