Georgia Slate Shingles

Georgia is bordered to the south by Florida, to the east by South Carolina, to the west by Alabama, and to the north by North Carolina and Tennessee. The Atlantic Ocean spans from Savannah south along the coast line. As a humid subtropical climate, it is well known for its hot and humid summers. During the summer-fall months, tropical storms, or hurricane-force winds and heavy rain can occur throughout the Georgia interior. When considering a roofing product that will weather all storms and shelter you from the elements, it is important to remember that natural slate roofing shingles meet the following standards:

Unlike faux/synthetic slate, natural slate has a rooftop history of servicing buildings for over 500 years (that’s right! slate roofs have been around for centuries!). In the USA, roofing slate quarries in Pennsylvania, Vermont and Virginia started producing materials in the 1830’s and have been operating ever since. This is a testament to the sustainability of natural stone roofing products, as it withstands the test of time for over 150 years. In the early 1900’s, Georgia slate was produced north of Atlanta in Rockmart, Polk County and Fairmount in Bartow County. The slate from Rockmart was originally produced by the Cherokee Slate Company and was a bluish-gray color similar to Pennsylvania’s Lehigh-Northampton region. In Fairmount, the Georgia Green Slate Company produced green slate that was described as being similar to gray/green slate from Vermont. When considering a slate roof in Georgia, you can look no further than the areas of; Berkeley Lake, Milton, Johns Creek, Skidaway Island, Dunwoody, Druid Hills, Sandy Springs, Alpharetta, Roswell, and Peachtree City.
