Minnesota’s architecture, like other Midwest States has seen its share of changes through the years.
  • 1850’s to 1900’s Italianate style homes, symmetrical rectangular shape with flat or low-pitched roofs.
  • 1880’s explosion of Victorian architecture such as Queen Anne and Romanesque
  • 1910 to early 1920 family homes were mostly bungalows incorporating the Arts and Crafts and Prairie School style of architecture
  • 1920’s homes were predominately Period Revival style
  • Towards the end of1920’s Art Deco style popular in the commercial sector
  • After World War II, the favored architectural style in Minnesota was Mid Century Modernism
  • In the 1970s a historic preservation movement started the Post Modernism movement.

Our involvement in the restoration of religious buildings includes; Church of Holy Cross in Minneapolis with our North Country Unfading Black and St. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Blue Earth, Minnesota with a 4 color slate blended roof. Additional projects include; Phalen Arcade Park Visitor Center in St. Paul with North Country Semi-Weathering Vermont Black roofing slate shingles and Greenbelt Terrace located at 1221 Marshall Street NE in Minneapolis also with Semi-Weathering Vermont Black slate roof. North Country Slate supplied Canadian made North Country Unfading Black, 24”L x 14”W x ¼”, for the James Hill House Museum restoration project in St. Paul.  Built in 1891, this massive, 36,000 square foot mansion is a classic example of Richardsonian Romanesque architecture.  Built by wealthy Great Northern Railway magnate, James J. Hill served as a family home until 1921.  In 1925, his four daughters purchased the home from the estate and donated it to the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis. In 1961, the house was designated a National Historic Landmark and in 1978 the Minnesota Historical Society acquired the house.
