Missouri Slate Roofing North Country Slate has been supplying premium quality roofing slate in Missouri since 1997. Whether it’s a new roof, re-roof or slate repair, we work closely with architects, roofing contractors and owners of government, religious and institutional buildings. Known as a border state, Missouri is surrounded by Tennessee, Iowa, Illinois, Kentucky, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kansas and Nebraska. Because of its location, Missouri played a key role in becoming the “Gateway to The West”. The architecture of Missouri exhibits a variety of residential and commercial styles throughout the state; Greek Revival style custom homes, Romanesque Revival style churches, Italian and Gothic Revival. A strong French presence in the late 1700’s, produced French Colonial style buildings. After World War I, homes began to reflect Colonial Revival style with dormers and traditional brick exteriors. Bungalows built in the 1920’s and 1930’s were popular in St. Louis working class neighborhoods. Art Deco and Neo-Renaissance style were also popular residential architecture in 1920’s and 1930’s. When it comes to maintaining a historic home, or building your dream custom home, it’s important to source a high-quality roofing slate product. In North America, roofing slate should only be tested by National Slate Association approved laboratories to ensure testing procedures are followed correctly. Slates are tested for flexure/breaking load (ASTM C120), water absorption (ASTM C121) and weather resistance (ASTM C217). If all of these test methods meet the requirements of C406, they receive a Grade S1 Classification which indicates the material will last a minimum of 75 years. North Country Unfading Black slate meets all of the requirements of an S1 rated roofing slate. Produced by a single quarry in Quebec, Canada, it has been favorably compared, by industry professionals, to the best natural roofing slates ever produced in North America. As well as a quality product, we maintain significant inventories of slate so that we can meet the delivery requirements and expectations of our clients. The slate for most projects is available from stock at the time of order. Our North Country Unfading Black slate was supplied for a re-roofing project in the Wydown-Forsyth historic district for a home built in 1929. This St. Louis district is characterized by its period homes built within 1909 to 1941. These period homes range in architectural style, from Colonial, Georgian Revival, Tudor Revival, English Medieval, Renaissance and some French, Italian and Spanish influences. Another North Country Unfading Black slate project was the re-roof of the National Military Heritage Museum, located at 701 Messanie Street in St. Louis. Built in 1909, this Richardson Romanesque building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009. We supplied 18” x 10” x ¼” Canadian Unfading Black for the turret. A custom blend of several North Country Slate colors creates a truly unique roof. North Country offers design suggestions on color, size, thickness and installation techniques, which will produce a spectacular custom roof. Multi-colored slate roofs are popular in Kansas City and Mission Hills neighborhoods. Slates can be semi-weathering and unfading, to soften the transition from color to color on the roof. A percentage of semi-weathering slates will weather to tones of brown and buff over time. Color options include Canadian Unfading Black, Semi-Weathering Vermont Black, Semi-Weathering Gray/Black (Strata Gray), Unfading Gray, Semi-Weathering Vermont Gray, Unfading Green, Semi-Weathering Green (Sea Green), Unfading Purple, Semi-Weathering Purple, Unfading Mottled Purple and Green.
