One of the most coveted styles of homes in Portland is the Craftsman. Popular in Ladd’s Addition, located in Portland’s inner southeast historic district, is Portland’s oldest planned residential development. These homes were built in the 1910’s and 1920’s and are often large, one to two storey homes with a gable roof. A smaller, cozy version of the Craftsman is the bungalow, built around 1920’s. These homes are asymmetrical in shape, one and a half stories, dormer windows, low pitched side gabled roof with large porches. Bungalows, popular in neighborhoods like Sunnyside (located in the south east section of Portland) is a community with strong Victorian architecture and bohemian culture. The Foursquare/Old Portland style homes, built in the late 1800’s to 1930, are a popular style of home in the inner East side of Portland. These homes are simple in design, have a large square exterior, are typically two stories, and display a simple pyramidal or hipped roof with wide eaves. There is a high concentration of Foursquare homes in Buckman, known for its wonderful restored old Portland homes and close to hip neighborhoods like Kerns, Laurelhurst, and Belmont. Ranch homes are scattered throughout Portland and in abundance neighborhoods like Cedar Hills. These homes were popular for post war middle class and were built in the 1950’s and 1960’s. Ranch homes have a long low-pitched roof and are often single story. Tudor homes are plentiful in neighborhoods like Irvington, Dolph Park, Laurelhurst and Alameda/Grant Park. These homes, built in the 1920’s through the 1940’s, are known for their embellishments and decorative details. Tudors are two stories with brick exteriors and steep roof lines. Cape Cods are scattered throughout Portland on the East and West sides and in Portsmouth. Built from 1930-1950, Cape Cods include; steeply pitch front facing roofs, dormers and symmetrical front facades. Lake Oswego in Clackamas County, Multnomah and Washington Counties is an affluent suburb of Portland. Located 8 miles south of downtown Portland this area is known for Mount Hood, Columbia Gorge, vineyards, beaches, lakes, forests and mountains. It is also one of the finest residential areas in Oregon. From 1920 to 1940, the most popular architectural styles were English Cottage and Tudor Revival homes. One of our commercial projects in the area was the First Citizen Bank. In 2015, we supplied 127 squares of North Country Unfading Black roofing slate (18”L x 10”W x 3/8” thick). Eastmoreland, located in Southeast Portland, is known for its unique residential character and impressive mansions. Seventy-five percent of the homes were constructed during the worst years of the Great Depression. The two historic revival styles constructed during this time was the classic Cape Cod House and the English Cottage with overlapping gables. Colonial Revival and Dutch-Colonial were also popular with a gambrel roof. These Colonial homes were formal, symmetrical, classic white trim, straight paths to homes and built with uniform materials.
