Maryland Slate Shingles

project Locations

Maryland Slate Roofing Maryland homeowners, architects, roofing contractors and owners of government, religious and institutional building have trusted North Country Slate’s products for over 20 years. Whether it’s a new roof, re-roof of a historic structure, or a repair, you can count on our experience and premium quality roofing slate we are proud to supply. Slate, created by nature over 500 million years ago, has been sheltering humans from the elements for more than a thousand years.  A slate roof is unaffected by freeze/thaw cycles, resistant to hail, fireproof, and extremely long lasting.  A good quality and properly installed slate roof will last for over 100 years. We have extensive work on custom homes in Potomac, Cottage City, Bethesda, Centreville, Reisterstown, Baltimore, Annapolis, Cockeysville, St. Michaels, Gibson Island, Catonsville, Towson, Pikesville and Owings Mills.  Colors supplied for these residential projects included, Semi-Weathering Gray/Black, Semi-Weathering Gray and multi-colored blends. Our North Country Unfading Black smooth textured slate quarried in Quebec, Canada, has been extremely popular and used extensively throughout Maryland. It has been favorably compared, by industry professionals, to the best natural roofing slate ever produced in North America. These comparisons would apply to the slates of Monson, Maine and the Peach Bottom area of Pennsylvania (which are no longer available), and the well-known black slates of Buckingham County, Virginia. Some of our North Country Unfading Black project references in Maryland include:

Our North Country Unfading Black Medium Textured slates exhibit a range of thickness from 1/4” – 3/8”, providing more definition in the appearance of the roof. This slate offers designers and building owners a high quality, durable and beautiful natural slate roof at an economical price. Medium Textured slates are ASTM S-1 rated and available on a first-come, first serve basis when in stock. We supplied 250 squares of our 20” x 10” x medium textured slate for Building #60 at the National Institute of Health in Bethesda. Built in 1923, as the Convent for the Sisters of the Visitation of Washington, our Canadian black slate was specified for this restoration project. A multi-colored slate roof is another popular choice throughout Maryland. A blend of slate colors both unfading and weathering can be supplied to create a truly unique roof. Our multi-colored blend was supplied for the Johns Hopkins University’s Gilman Hall in Baltimore, which was the winner of the 2012 NRCA Gold Circle Award. In Towson, we supplied a multi-colored blend for the addition at Loyola Blakefield preparatory school’s Wheeler Hall which was originally built in 1933.  The slates were carefully chosen to match the original building.  North Country Slate supplied a three color blend of 75% Semi-Weathering Grey/Green, 20% Semi-Weathering Purple and 5% of Unfading Grey/Green. A custom combination of lengths, widths and thicknesses providing a design detail to add depth to the roof by creating the impression that the rafter length is longer than actual. Longer, wider and thicker slates are installed along the eaves, with diminishing sizes and thicknesses employed progressively up the roof slope towards the ridge. Two other sought after slate colors for private residences in Maryland are North Country Semi-Weathering Gray/Black and North Country Semi-Weathering Gray. The Gray/Black slate also known as Strata Gray is a premium quality roofing slate of varying shades of gray with inclusions of black and darker gray.  A small percentage of theses slates will weather to tones of brown and buff over time. Our Semi-Weathering Gray slate is a rich battleship gray color that deepens over time. These are popular alone or in combination with other slates to create a multicolored roof.  Both are produced by select Vermont quarries and meet the requirements of an ASTM S-1 rated roofing slate. Service areas include; Chesapeake Beach, Ocean City, Bowie, La Plata, College Park, Cheverly, Easton, Riverdale Park, Hyattsville, Mount Rainier, Bolton Hill, Canton, Cathedral Hill, Colonial, Annapolis, Ellicott City, Federal Hill, Federal Hill South, Fells Point, Greater Homeland, Guilford, Mount Vernon Place, Ridgely’s Delight, Roland Park, Cumberland, Hagerstown, Frederick, Bethesda, Laurel, Gaithersburg, Baltimore, Aberdeen, Salisbury, St. Michael’s, Prince Frederick, St. Mary’s City, La Plata and Rockville.
