Slate Roofing Projects in Washington

Slate has been keeping people warm and dry since the early 14th Century, with the earliest use of slate as a roofing material being traced to the notoriously challenging climate of Northern Europe. While roofing slate was originally applied with whichever sizes and thicknesses of slates were available at the time, its manufacture and extraction has improved dramatically over the centuries. It’s now most commonly trimmed to 18 or 20 inches long by between 8 and 14 inches wide for field slates, although it can be produced in both larger and smaller sizes. The standard width for roofing slate is ¼-3/8 inches, and will usually weigh anywhere from 935-1,170 lbs per 100 square feet of roof area.

For more than two decades, North Country Slate has been providing Washington roofers, homeowners, and businesses with the best quality roofing material available in North America. Our slate roof tiles can be seen on top of homes and businesses across the state. Some of the projects we are most pleased with having supplied slate tiles include:

  • Fort Flagler State Park Hospital Building in Nordland, WA (Unfading Black)
  • Fort Colombia State Park in Chinook, WA (Unfading Black)
  • The Spokane County Courthouse Tower in Spokane, WA (Unfading Black)

The Advantages of Slate Roof Tiles

Roofing slate tiles are among the most resilient and durable roofing materials available. Slate is naturally fire-resistant, and it is immune to freeze-thaw cycles that leave lesser roofing materials warped or compromised. ASTM S1 graded slate is capable of withstanding both hailstorms and hurricane-force winds. Properly installed, a slate tile roof will have a service life three times longer than inferior shingle or synthetic slate roofs.

North Country Slate prides itself on providing an outstanding customer experience. Because our success is only built upon our customers’ satisfaction, we make it our priority to ensure that your slate roof experience is second-to-none. From our design support services for architects and builders, to our database of qualified slate roofs contractors we’re happy to recommend, we spare no expense in making certain your slate roof meets all your demands and provides your home or business with a century of security and style.

FAQ

Nominal 1-inch lumber or ¾-inch APA plywood is the recommended roof decking for installing slate roofs. These materials provide minimum while nailing the slate to the roof deck, and supports the weight of the slate between rafters.

Natural slate roof tiles have demonstrated their effectiveness in the harshest climates on the globe. ASTM S1 graded roofing slate is naturally resistant to both fire and freeze-thaw cycles, allowing it to excel in all climatic conditions.

Absolutely! Slate tiles damaged by windborne debris or fallen tree limbs can be removed and replaced by qualified slate roof contractors or skilled handyperson. If fewer than approximately 20% of a roof’s slate tiles are damaged, they can be replaced without compromising the roof. Instructions for replacing a broken slate are available here.
