North Country Slate is the exclusive distributor of the Glendyne quarry Unfading Black roofing slate. Rich black in colour, it meets (or exceeds), ASTM requirements of an S-1 rated roofing slate, Class A fire rating, and is produced in North America. Available in several thicknesses, including 3/16” lightweight slates-weighing approximately 650 pounds per square, which are extremely popular in California. In addition to the Canadian Unfading Black slate, other popular colors in the California residential market include; Unfading Green, Semi-Weathering Green, Mottled Purple, Purple, Grey and Grey/Black which are produced in Vermont. Los Angeles, the largest city in California, is known for its sunny climate, beautiful beaches, sprawling mansions, the famous Hollywood sign, and is the center of the United States film/television industry. The homes in Beverly Hills are distinct and vary in appearance and style, ranging from modern mansions to popular period revival masterpieces. The five architectural styles worth recognizing while touring the streets of Beverly Hills are; Spanish Colonial, Traditional, Rural European, Contemporary, and Period Revival. San Francisco, known for its famous Golden Gate Bridge, cable cars, Alcatraz, and colorful Victorian houses. In 1849, when the speculators of the gold rush arrived, the homes built were Italianate-a movement that tried to recreate countryside Italian villas. The Queen Anne Victorian style homes were built between the 1849 Gold Rush and the 1906 Earthquake and Fire. Queen Anne homes feature turrets, gabled slate roofs with decorated roof lines and bay windows. You can see some of these homes in Cow Hollow, Pacific Heights, Ashbury Heights and Alamo Square. In 1999, we supplied 185 squares of our North Country Unfading Black for the San Francisco Theological Seminary. Years later, this slate was specified for the San Francisco Murphy Windmill and Millwright’s Cottage restoration at Golden Gate Park. In both cases, the unfading black slate was selected as it was an excellent match to the original slate. Slate roofers enjoy working with this material as it is easy to trim, has consistent thickness and arrives on site with virtually zero breakage. Back in the day, Atherton (located 45 minutes south of San Francisco and less than 20 minutes to Silicon Valley), was popular with San Franciscans who established summer homes there.
