Achieving the historic, rugged aesthetic desired for this Missouri estate required a highly specialized roofing specification. North Country Slate supplied 205 squares of our premium North Country Semi-Weathering Vermont Black natural roofing slate shingles.
To create a visually stunning, traditional “graduated thickness” roof system, the slates were delivered in 20” lengths with random widths, across three distinct, heavy thicknesses:
- ⅜” – ½” thickness
- ½” – ¾” thickness
- ¾” – 1” thickness
Graduated slate roofs can present unique installation challenges. Because the thickness of the tiles reduce as they move up from the eaves to the ridges. Additionally, this intricate architectural design featured dovetail-cut tiles that gracefully curve on the hip ridges, demanding precise attention to detail and expert installation.
Transporting 205 squares of heavy-textured, thick-graded slate required multiple truckloads, carefully coordinated and delivered directly to the job site. North Country Slate is proud to partner with Old World Roofing on the multi-stage, historic roof replacement of Saint Louis University’s iconic DuBourg Hall. Originally opened in 1888, this spectacular Romanesque Revival structure serves as the historic heart of the campus, housing vital academic and administrative functions.
A building of this magnitude demands an equally monumental roofing solution. DuBourg Hall is a masterclass in 19th-century craftsmanship, featuring two-foot-thick load-bearing walls, intricate cast-iron staircases, and massive timber trusses. To protect its architectural legacy and structural integrity, a premium, enduring roofing material was non-negotiable.
