What size are slate roof tiles?

Slate roof tiles can range in size from 12” (length) x 6” (wide) up to 24” (length) x 12” (wide).  Special sizes such as slate-and-a-half can be ordered to reach into valleys, gable ends, hips and dormers. Slate roof tiles are rectangle in shape but can be trimmed into special shapes such as clipped corners, diamond, fish scale and hexagon.

How roofing slate is produced

North American natural roofing slate is produced in Vermont, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Newfoundland and Quebec. Depending on the location of the quarry will determine the color of slate.

Roofing Slate Thickness

Alderson Train Depot – Alderson, West Virginia

North Country Slate recently supplied our unfading black roofing slate for the Alderson Train Depot restoration project. Originally built in one week by the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway (C & O) in 1896, it is very similar to the other C & O depots built between 1890 to 1914.
